Cast in several parts and screw-mounted, with softwood and cast iron. Designed as two mythological figures holding four-flame cornucopia candelabras with central removable flame stoppers. H 70 cm.
Paris, first third 19th C.

Mercury and Psyche are mythological figures from Apuleius' Metamorphoses. The beauty of the king's daughter Psyche surpassed even that of Aphrodite. Out of jealousy, the goddess ordered her son Eros to made Psyche fall in love with an ugly demon. Instead, Eros fell in love with Psyche himself and fathered a child with her. The enraged Aphrodite sent Mercury, the messenger of the gods, to bring Psyche to Olympus to punish her.
