Little is known about the life of the sculptor Philippe Poitevin (1831 - 1907). He was a pupil of Joseph-Marius Ramus and Armand Toussaint and exhibited for the first time at the Salon in 1855. The most important commission from his Paris period were the 85 stone sculptures for the Lesdiguières Pavilion in the Louvre Palace. He then moved to Marseille, where he created two groups depicting children for the main staircase of the Musée des Beaux Arts. He subsequently received further documented commissions in Marseille, mostly for public buildings.
