Andrea Belvedere, called Abate Andrea

Putti Adorning a Bust with Flowers - Allegory of Sculpture

Oil on canvas (relined). 117.5 x 137 cm.

Andrea Belvedere, one of the most esteemed still-life painters of the Neapolitan Baroque, was initially inspired by artists such as Paolo Porpora and Giovanni Battista Recco; later he took his cue from models such as Abraham Breughel and Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo and adopted their lavish opulence. As was not unusual, Belvedere, as a flower specialist, often collaborated with figure painters such as Giordano and Solimena. In the present painting, the figures can be attributed to the hand of Nicola Vaccaro.
Professor Nicola Spinosa confirmed this attribution at the last auction.
