South German early 16th century

An early 16th century South German figure of Saint Nicholas

Presumably limewood, carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. With remnants of older polychromy. A figure of the saint standing in a gently swaying pose, designed for a frontal viewpoint. He is depicted dressed in bishop's robes carrying a book upon which rest three gold nuggets in his extended left hand. The sculptural quality of the work is especially evident in the tall vertical pleats and rounded drapery of the voluminous cloak around the figure's body.
With wear and minor losses. The right hand and the crozier replaced. Height 95 cm.
