An early 16th century Mechelen carved figure of the Virgin and Child

Walnut, carved in the round, the reverse only summarily worked. With extensive remains of presumably partially original older polychromy. Designed for a frontal viewpoint. The work depicts the Virgin in a red gown and golden cloak, carrying the clothed Christ Child in both hands before Her. He in turn holds a bunch of grapes as a symbol of the Eucharist in His hands.
With insect damage and minor wear throughout. Mounted on a modern velvet-covered wooden plinth. Height 29.5 cm.
