Victor Boucquet

Portrait of Jacob Duyvene Crooppman from Ypres

Oil on panel (parquetted). 105 x 73.5 cm.

We know the name of the man depicted in this work from the letter placed on the table beside him: "Den Eersamen heer Jacob Duyvene Coopmann tot Yperen-port". The family coat of arms on the left, as well as the figure of his patron, St. James of Compostella, on the right, confirm the identification of the sitter. Very few portraits by the painter Victor Boucquet, who came from the Flemish town of Veurne, are known to us. They date from the artist's late creative period and are characterised by a more Baroque style influenced by Spanish art. According to Jan de Maere's expertise, the present painting is an early work by the artist, which can be dated to the second half of the 1640s. During this period, Victor Boucquet worked with his father Marc Boucquet, who was influenced by the art of Peter Paul Rubens.
