A Pala grey stone stele of Vishnu. Northeastern India, Bihar. Pala period, 11th/12th century

Standing on a small double lotus cushion above a base with foliage at the centre and three adorants to the sides. The principal hands formerly in front of utapala, the subsidiary hands holding gada and chacra. The body is adorned with earrings, necklace, bracelets, a belt and the Holy Thread. To his sides Lakshmi with a flywhisk and Sarasvati with a vina, on the back-slab above them lions on tiny elephants and geese. The top missing. Triangular tang.
