A large hardwood door lintel. Southwestern India, northern Kerala. 18th century

The carved front side is subdevided into six panels, at the centre above Rama and Sita flanked by two rishi with water pots and other male and female figures, below female servants with fans, rishis and other figures; the upper left with Vishnu Narayana on the snake Ananta above the cosmic ocean giving birth to Brahma, Bhu Devi massaging Vishnu's feet and Lakshmi, below Gaja Lakshmi and two elephants pouring water over her, to the right in the upper register Parashurama, Rama, Buddha, Krishna and Kalkin, below the Vishnu avatara fish, tortoise, boar and the dwarf Vamana. Remains of red pigments.
