The Baroque opera "Antiochus and Stratonica" or "L'Amore Ammalato. Die kranckende Liebe" by Christoph Graupner was first performed in Hamburg in 1708. The offbeat subject, namely the desperate love of the Seleucid prince Antiochus I Soter for his stepmother Stratonice, subsequently received renewed attention in the arts. Jacques Louis David created a large history painting depicting the tragic story in 1774, which is now housed in the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris. The model for the composition on this plate has not yet been identified.
