A Berlin KPM biscuit porcelain vase with an allegory of architecture

Urbino vase model screw-mounted to an octagonal base. Biscuit porcelain vase decorated on the display side with a lady in classical garments wearing a column shaped crown accompanied by two amoretti holding a model of the Parthenon and the Cologne Cathedral. Gold arrow mark, impressed marks. Restorations to the moulding of the shaft, minor scratches, running in the paint, small chips to the handles. H 47 cm.
After 1845.

This vase is decorated with a motif originally painted by Wilhelm von Kaulbach (1805 – 1874) in the upper level of the stairway in the Neues Museum in Berlin, which was constructed by Friedrich August Stüler in 1845. At the time it was made, the reconstruction of Cologne Cathedral in the Gothic style was still in planning. The allegory illustrates the principle that the newly rediscovered Gothic style was equal to the Classical ideal. Unfortunately, Kaulbach's stairway was destroyed during WWII.
