A Régence walnut chest of drawers with corner pilasters

Walnut, maple, plum, cherry and pewter veneers on oak and softwood; ormolu mountings, brass, iron locks, later marble top. With five drawers in four rows, resting on four ormolu paw feet. With veneer motifs typical of the period separated by pewter stringing, the fronts of the drawers with brass borders. The large central lockplate with Louis XIV style mascaron motifs. In very good restored condition, wear to the gilding of the mountings retouched. H 84, W 129, D 69.5 cm.
Eastern France, attributed to Franche-Comté, around 1730.

This type is based on a design by Thomas Hache (1664 - 1747), a cabinetmaker from Grenoble. In the course of their research, Deloche/Mornand discovered a series of Eastern French commodes with scrolling corner pilasters veneered in regional woods, which were probably all produced in the area around Lyon and north-east of there. This attribution can presumably also be applied to the present work.
