Probably West Germany first half 14th century

A carved wood Corpus Christi, presumably West German, first half 14th century

Carved in the round, the arms separately attached. With extensive remains of older polychromy and partial gilding. Depicting Christ crucified with three nails, with His arms pulled slightly upwards and His head leaning to one side in death. The detailed but stylised rendering of the body lends the figure an expressive quality, which is further emphasised by the in part fragmentary character of the piece.
Vertical cracks to the torso. The head and neck as well as the legs beneath the perizonium reattached. With wear throughout, most of the fingers lost. Height 107 cm, width of arms 85 cm.

Provenance

Belgian private ownership.
