Probably Alpenländisch 1st half 15th century

A carved wood Corpus Christi, presumably Alpine Region, 1st half 15th century

Carved in the round, the back and the back of the perizonium slightly flattened. With older polychromy. This figure, impressive in spite of or perhaps because of its fragmentary nature, depicts Christ crucified with His head leaning to one side in death. The fine quality of the piece is evident in the detailed depiction of the body, with its elongated proportions and parallel legs, as well as the exceptionally precise rendering of the hair and the folds of the perizonium, whereby the broad wound in Christ's side and the painted droplets of blood increase the work's expressiveness.
The arms, which were attached separately, as well as some of the freestanding parts of the hair and the perizonium lost. Losses to the perizonium and the toes due to earlier insect damage. Height 149 cm.

Provenance
