A figure of a female saint, Upper Rhine Region, 2nd half 15th century

Wood, carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. With minimal remains of former polychromy. Figure of a crowned saint standing in a gently swaying pose, holding an open book in her right hand. The identifying attribute presumably originally held in her left hand now lost. Much of the finely carved figure's sculptural appeal derives from the rich and varied drapery of the cloak with its deep rounded folds, long pleats and overlapping areas.
Left hand lost. Wear with minor losses, especially to the crown. Height 47.5 cm.
