A carved wood relief of St Matthew, Bavaria, 1st quarter 17th century

Partially freestanding, the original front strip on the lower edge separately attached. Depicting the Evangelist seated at a writing desk, assisted by an angel holding an ink well. The work has in the past been assigned to Hans Degler (1564-1635), a South German late Renaissance artist active in Welheim in Bavaria as of 1590.
Wear with losses, especially to the upper edge. 44 x 33.5 cm.
