Hermanus Koekkoek II

Cliff in Southern England with Fishermen Hauling in their Nets

Oil on canvas (relined). 90 x 145 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: H Koekkoek London 1880.

Due to the similarity of his name to that of his father, the marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek the Elder and grandson of Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek, the author of this work is referred to as Hermanus Koekkoek II. Like his father, he occasionally used the pseudonym Jan van Couver, but also signed his paintings with Louis van Staaten.
Hermanus II began painting in 1851, first in Amsterdam and from 1863 in London, where the present work was created in 1880.
