A pair of Tibetan wooden Torgam shrine-doors. Second half 19th century

Each door made from two wooden pannels each depicting a three-eyed Mahakala head wearing a crown with five skulls (symbol of the five principal kleshas or mental poisons) and flames. He wears large earrings and jewellery. One of the doors with an old restoration. Mounted on a base.
Height 44.1 cm; total width 66.6 cm

Torgam shrines are used for storing tormas, figures mostly made of flour and butter used in tantric rituals or as offerings in Tibetan Buddhism to please and pacify the protecting deities like that of Mahakala.
