A rare Chinese export model of a goose. Qianlong period, around 1750-80

With transparent, slightly bluish glaze, brownish tint on the beak and tail feathers. It has its head turned back to the right and is preening its wing feathers. The soles of the feet and two circular areas on the underside are unglazed.
Height 26.3 cm

The goose may have been modelled on Meissen sculptures made for the Japanese Palace in Dresden. The curved neck and the bulge on the forehead are reminiscent of Johann Friedrich Eberlein's (1696–1749) swan model from 1735. The present piece, however, has unmistakably the physiognomy of a Chinese goose.
