An oval platter from the 'Pompadour' service. Qianlong period, around 1745

With oblique rim and unglazed base. Decorated in famille rose, iron red and gold with flowers and pseudo coat of arms. Iron-red sprigs on the outer wall.

It has been speculated that this service was ordered for the Marquise de Pompadour, a mistress of King Louis XV. Since then, it has been erroneously referred to as the Pompadour service' in literature and trade. See Howard & Ayers, China for the West, Vol II, London/New York 1978, p. 443
