A very large gold lacquer coffer. Edo period, 18th century

A coffer on a curved plinth, with a formerly hinged lid. Entirely covered with nashiji, in two-toned gold and silver takamakie on the lid and on the front a large phoenix between branches of a paulownia tree with large leaves and flowers. The eyes and the central point of the tail feathers inlaid in mother-of-pearl. Numerous fittings in gilded copper, chased with leafy vines on a punched ground. Long side handles. Interior completely lined with old gold brocade.
