Of rectangular shape, the lid with a rider in Heian-period costume, participant of the Kamo horse race, in gold takamakie and hiramakie with kirikane, on a black lacquer ground with a little nashiji, the reverse of the lid with the rider's upper robe, eboshi and sword on nashiji. The box itself with ink stone is divided into compartments decorated with aoi leaves on nashiji, alluding to the Aoi festival that follows a few days after the ceremonial Kamo kurebauma. Small chips to the lacquer and the metal-rimmed edges, the water dropper missing. Cushion.
