An ivory netsuke of Edo meibutsu (famous products of Edo). Edo/Tokyo. Second half 19th century

Six famous local produce from Edo are arranged into a compact composition: Kaminari okoshi (sweetened puffed rice) in a bag decorated with the drums of Raiden in the Asakusa Kaminari-mon; clams wrapped in straw, three satoimo (taro, dasheen), Ômori karashizuke (pickels marinated in hot mustard from Ômori) from the Yamamoto shop, a carved bullfinch from the Kameido Tenmangû shrine used in a ritual exchange (usogae), and a gift box with unknown content. These famous products were bought by travelers as souvenirs (omiyage) for their relatives and friends at home.
