A Florentine silver writing set

With two figures of tritons forming the shaft supporting a large shell quill holder. The globe-shaped body opens to reveal an ink well, pounce box and small dish. The handle engraved with the signs of the zodiac, the base "J.10". H 25; diameter 13 cm, weight 1,460 g.
Florence, marks of Gaetano Guadagni, around 1820.

The Guadagni were among the most important dynasties of goldsmiths in the 18th and 19th centuries. Gaetano Guadagni took over his father Giovanni's workshop in 1818. Alongside the creation of fine quality works for the clergy, he also took on commissions from the Tuscan grand ducal court. See Donaver-Dabbene, Argenti italiani dell'800, vol. 2, no. 1455.
