Two gouache paintings of marching soldiers

Gouache on parchment (?), mounted on paper. With older French inscription to the blue tinted paper on the reverse. H 11.8, W 15 cm. In a glazed ebonised oakwood frame, H 20.3, W 24 cm.

These two gouaches are based on engravings of soldiers by Johann Theodor de Bry (1528 - 1598), who in turn drew on motifs by the Nuremberg-born Hans Sebald Beham (1500 - 1550).
