A micromosaic panel "Il Tevere a Castel Sant'Angelo"

Glass micromosaic mounted in mastic on support. In the original ormolu frame with blackened iron panel on the reverse, H 32.7, W 38.8 cm.
Rome, mid-19th C.

The Museo di Roma houses a painting by Ippolito Caffi (1809 - 1866), inv. no. MR 947, which shows the same view, also at sunrise, which was painted after 1843. It is possible that the painting served as a model for this micromosaic.

The finely moulded ormolu frame is adorned with a round medallion bearing the coat of arms of Pope Pius IX, who was appointed to his office in 1846. The excellent quality of the work, the meaningful choice of view and the atmospheric and detailed finish suggest that this panel was a gift from the pope.
