The King of Rome

Pale grey lava stone, red Mediterranean coral (corallium rubrum). Depicting a youth in a classical drapery seated on a coral branch. One foot reattached. H 17.6 cm. On a gilt softwood stand, total H 24.6 cm.
Attributed to Naples, after 1811.

Emperor Napoleon gave the title "Roi de Rome" to his only son Napoléon François Joseph Charles Bonaparte, born in 1811. The author of this piece was probably inspired by one of the first portraits of the toddler, namely the "Portrait de Napoleon II" by François Pascal Simon Gérard, which was created in 1811 and hangs in the Palace of Versailles.
