The present canvas shows frequently recurring motifs from the imagery of the painter Lambert de Hondt, who specialised in horse battles. Worthy of mention are the diagonal structure of the depiction, the light falling on the figures in the foreground, the rendering of the horses as well as the dramatic depiction of the figures.
The scene shown here can be compared with the signed work "Landscape with the Attack of a Group of Horsemen on a Chariot" in the Städel in Frankfurt, which, however, is a small work painted on copper (20.5 x 29.9 cm), or with the likewise smaller picture "An Encampment with Soldiers Playing Cards" in the Wellington Collection at Apsley House in London.
