Franconia circa 1500/1510

A Franconian carved wooden figure of the Mourning Virgin, circa 1500/1510

Carved in the round, the reverse only summarily carved. Remains of older polychromy. A full-figure depiction of the Virgin standing in contrapposto with Her right foot extended, Her features pensive, Her hands folded before Her body. She would originally haved gazed upwards at a figure of Christ on the cross. The work's sculptural quality is evidenced especially in the way the Virgin's cloak drapes around Her slender body. The facial features of this Franconian work clearly betray the influence of the artist's contemporary Tilman Riemenschneider.
Several short vertical cracks. Wear with minor losses. Worm damage. Height 88 cm.

Provenance

Rhenish private ownership.
