A carved wood figure of the mourning Virgin, presumably Bavaria, early 16th century

Carved in the round. Extensive remains of partially overpainted older polychromy. A depiction of the Virgin Mary in a veil with Her hands clasped, standing in a gently swaying pose and designed for a frontal viewpoint. Presumably from a Crucifixion scene.
Some minor cracks to the head and plinth. A crack between the left hand and arm. A dent with a minor loss to the lower edge on the reverse. Height 68 cm.

Provenance

Acquired in 1963 at the art dealer J. J. Klejman, New York. - Since then in an Austrian private collection.
