Jörg Lederer, circle of

A carved wood figure of St Barbara, circle of Jörg Lederer

Presumably limewood, carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. With partially overpainted older polychromy. Depiction of the crowned saint designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint, with the chalice as her discerning attribute held in her extended left hand. The strongly three-dimensional quality of the piece is accentuated by the play of drapery of the cloak, which the saint wears drawn across her body over a pleated gown. The design of the figure, and especially the facial features, are especially reminiscent of the works of the Allgäu based sculptor Jörg Lederer, whose workshop in Kaufbeuren delivered sculptures as far afield as South Tyrol in the years around 1510/1515.
The tip of the right foot lost, the back part of the plinth presumably replaced. Wear and losses to the crown. Height 139 cm.

Provenance

Dutch private collection.
