Probably Southern Netherlands ca. 1530/1550

A carved wood relief with the Dormition of the Virgin, presumably Southern Netherlands, around 1530/1550

Carved wood, the reverse flattened, presumably set into the original frame. With extensively overpainted older polychromy. This relief depicts the Virgin Mary in Her deathbed surrounded by the twelve mourning Apostles with the diminutive kneeling figures of the work's patrons at the foot of the bed. The piece presumably originally formed the top part of an altarpiece. The ornamentation of the frame allows this stylistically more conservative relief to be dated to before 1550.
The originally extended hands of two apostles lacking, the areas sanded down. Wear with losses to the polychromy. The slender inner strip of the frame partially replaced. 90 x 120 x 18 cm (with frame).

Provenance

In south German private ownership since 1975.
