Anton Radl

Rhine Landscape with a View of Drachenfels

Oil on canvas (relined). 33.5 x 43.5 cm.
Signed and dated lower right (on the stone): A Radl 1844.

Together with a somewhat smaller variant of the same motif on copper (exhib. cat. Anton Radl, loc. cit., p. 85, no. 31), the present canvas is the last dated work by the Vienna-born artist Anton Radl, who lived in Frankfurt am Main from the age of 20. Radl, who worked as a painter and engraver, is regarded as something of a mediator between the idealistic style of the 18th century and the naturalistic plein air painting of the 19th century. In this veduta with the Drachenfels mountain, "the scenic sophistication of the mountain and castle motif captured in the distance dominates the work" (B. Sander in exhib. cat. Anton Radl, op. cit., p. 40).
