Born in Hilversum, Johannes Gijsbertus van Ravenswaay specialised in painting summer and winter landscapes with animals and forest views under the guidance of his uncle Jan van Ravenswaay. He undertook several study trips to Germany, where he died in Boppard at the age of just 34.
