A Kuro-Raku chawan. Kyoto. 18th century

Of cylindrical shape, the foot with a spiral inside, entirely covered by white glaze and blackish brownish porous glaze. Stamped Raku. Wooden box, the lid's underside inscribed Sa'nyū saku kuro chawan nagaame (made by Sa'nyu black chawan (named) Eternal rain), signed Sōshitsu with kaō. Shifuku.
Height 8.2 cm; diameter 11.7 cm

After the retirement of his father-in-law in 1708, Sanyū (1685-1739) succeeded as the 6th generation Raku, which he held until his retirement in 1728.
This Sōshitsu signature belongs to Tantansai Sekisō Sōshitsu 淡々斎碩叟宗室 (1893-1964), 14th generation tea master of the Urasenke school of tea ceremony.
