A Seto cylindrical bowl, probably for ash (hiire). Owari province. Late 18th century

With straight walls on an almost flat base, covered with a grey crackled glaze, a turquoise, pinkish and olive-green glaze running down from the rim, in iron-brown cross-hatching and zigzag pattern. Stamped on the base: Shunzan (Katō Shunzan, active ca. 1770). Wooden box. On the lid inscribed: Koman suji hiire, on the back signed: Ō furō-shi Matsumoto ... and seal. Pasted paper label inscribed in Latin letters: Zoroku Hiire EG and another label inscribed no. 28. The paper label on the side of the box reads: Koman suji hiire.
height 8.7 cm; diameter 12.7 cm

The Japanese inscription refers to a hiire created by a furō master. Furō (charcoal basins) are usually made of metal. Also, the inscription by Grosse attributing the bowl to Zoroku, does not match the bowl, which, based on the seal and also the style, can clearly be attributed to the Shunzan workshop.
