A lacquered wood tray for incense utensils. Second half of the Edo period

With rounded corners and a low rim lined with lead, displaying a lady resembling an Okame leaning onto an armrest and wearing a kimono with kiri pattern, the hand raised to her mouth, rendered in golden, grey and a little black lacquer, the face and neck of mother-of-pearl, all on a red ground with small black patches in the manner of negoro, the underside lacquered black. The numerous finely executed patterns on the robe and the armrest rendered in gold. Wooden box, the lid inscribed: Jidai makie kobon (Old makie incense tray).
Height 2.4 cm; 18.2 x 25.8 cm
