A very fine boxwood netsuke of an octopus in a suribachi. 19th century

The tako sits deep inside the shallow grinder and slings his tentacles around itsself an the rim of the bowl, the tentacles finely carved and the outside of the ceramic bowl rendered naturalistically in ukibori. The eye pupils of black horn. Signed Masatomo ko.
Height 2.9 cm; width 4.5 cm

Based on the carving style and the use of ukibori as well as the very dark staining of the wood, this netsuke is probably carved by Masatomo from Nagoya who is mentioned in the literature. However, hardly any verified works by this carver have survived. The use of the suffix ko (worked) is not very common.
