Adam and Eve
Veneto or Tyrol, 16th C.

Moulded glass panel painted on reverse with opaque and transparent pigments and gilding. Upper left corner broken out and reinserted, retouching. Painted softwood frame, H 32, W 28.5 cm.

This finely rendered early reverse glass painting is based on an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi (c. 1470 - c. 1534) after Raphael.

Raphael's iconography for the Fall of Man was so convincing and ingenious that Peter Paul Rubens also adopted Raimondi's engraving as a model for the oil painting "Adam and Eve" (Rubens House Antwerp), which was created around 1600.
