The Adoration of the Magi
Tyrol, second half 17th C.

Glass panel painted on reverse in eglomisé technique with shell gold and silver and opaque and transparent pigments. Minor retouches to the white. Gilt and painted softwood frame, H 15.2, W 9.6 cm.

This reverse glass painter based his small and exceptionally finely painted devotional image on a well-known motif. The image was reproduced frquently in Flanders, with earliest examples dating from the beginning of the 16th century. A very similar image of the Adoration of the Magi was painted by Frans Francken the Younger (1581 - 1642) between 1612 and 1615, which is now housed in the National Museum in Warsaw (acc. no. M.Ob.284). Probably the most famous version of this figural composition was the one painted by Peter Paul Rubens (1577 - 1640), which is dated to around 1633 - 34. Originally created for a convent in Löwen, the work is today housed on the altar of King's College Chapel in Cambridge. It was reproduced as an engraving by Jan Witdoeck in 1638, shortly after its completion.
