An Arnstadt faience syrup jar

With foliate decor. Unglazed unmarked base. Yellowed restorations around the lip and edge of the spout, glaze wear. H 20 cm.
17th C.

The Arnstadt faiences were first made known to a wider public through the exhibition in Eisenach and the catalogue by Ulrich Lappe. The attribution to Arnstadt is based on archaeological finds, as the products from the astonishingly large production are now scattered throughout museum collections from Belgium to Poland, often in the fragmentary/completed state of archaeological finds. Numerous manufacturers in Arnstadt produced "blue Arnstadt pots" for around 100 years, especially many in the period after 1650. Lappe assumes that the founding of the Dorotheental faience manufactory in 1715 in the immediate surroundings was such strong competition that it led to the decline of Arnstadt production - as did the exhaustion of the deposits of white clay that were mined in the town.

Provenance

Private collection, Rhineland.
