A rare Saxon writing cabinet

Walnut and burr walnut veneer over conifer and oak base, mirrors, iron locks, brass mountings, bone inlays. Slightly serpentine lower section with three drawers and an arched apron on compressed bun feet, on top a writing compartment behind a drop flap with six drawers in three rows, in between a further drawer with four pidgeonholes and a concealed drawer in the base. Two-door upper section beneath a breakfront pediment with mirrored doors on the inside. Behind it an unusual folding mechanism for a large standing desk above two rows of drawers. Behind the flap eleven drawers in four rows around a central, mirrored compartment. Fine symmetrical veneers. The base amended, older damage to the veneer, the gold paintwork around the fillings later. H 231, W 107, D 56 cm.
Dresden, mid-18th C.

This piece of furniture is unique in its design. The simple outline stands in stark contrast to a sophisticated construction and opulent surface design. When you open the doors, you are confronted with a closed surface characterised by an outstanding use of veneers. The surfaces of the drawers underneath, with their magnificent combination of opposing walnut and walnut burl veneers, also create an eye-catching picture.
