Limoges 12th century

A three-part 12th century Limoges enamel plaque

Rolled copper; the figure of Christ and the apostle's heads applied, presumably bronze; partially gilded, enamelled. Consisting of three panels, formerly mountings, depicting Christ in the centre, enthroned on a rainbow against a mandorla holding a book and blessing, surrounded by the symbols of the four Evangelists. The side panels depict saints, also against mandorlas.
Each with four small drilled holes. Wear and losses. Mounted with nails to a newer velvet covered wooden frame. Central panel 7.5 x 9.5 cm, side panels each 7.5 x 5.0 cm.

Provenance

Collection of Dr Richard von Schnitzler (1855-1938), Cologne. - By descent in family ownership to the present day.
