Johann Michael Fischer

A carved limewood figure of St John from a Crucifixion by Johann Michael Fischer

Carved in the round, the reverse only summarily carved. With minimal remains of former polychromy. Following an apprenticeship under Johann Wolfgang von der Auwera in Würzburg, Johann Michael Fischer took over the studio of the deceased Stephan Luidl in Dillingen, and in the ensuing years rose to become one of the leading Rococo sculptors in Swabia. This figure of St. John, the pose of which indicates that it originates from a Crucifixion scene, can be dated to around 1760.
With some vertical hairline cracks, minimal wear. The left side of the plinth replaced. Height 62 cm.

Provenance

From a private collection in Constance.
