Johann Graf

Southern landscape with waterfall and village, horsemen and a beggar

Oil on panel. 24,3 x 33 cm.

Little is known about the painter Johann Graf, who was active in Vienna in the second half of the 17th century. Older literature gives his date of death as 1710, but a few years ago a signed work appeared on the Paris auction market, a depiction of the "Tower of Babel", which was dated 1716 and clearly revealed the influence of Lucas van Valckenborch. In the oeuvre of Johann Graf known to date, influences from both Dutch and French landscape painting of his time can be observed.
