Stoning of Saint Stephen

Pen and brown ink, wash, with remnants of a preliminary drawing with graphite. 24 x 22.2 cm.

Inscribed lower left on the mount: N 65 Gio: Batta Paggi / Bottom right: collezione S Varni.
The Genoese sculptor Santo Varni (1807 - 1885), to whom this drawing once belonged, attributed it to the painter Giovanni Battista Paggi, who also came from Genoa. It was auctioned as such at Cambi in Genoa in 2013. However, Mary Newcome and Silvana Bareggi had already attributed the sheet to Paggi's highly talented pupil, Giulio Benso, in 1985. This attribution was later confirmed by Piero Boccardo.
