A large square Satsuma jar. Late 19th century

Of nearly cubic shape, painted all over with a dense pattern of chrysanthemum flowers, to each side in slightly sunken cartouches, painted in enamels and gold with chicken next to bamboo and morning glories, peonies by a bamboo trellis, water fowl in a pond with various plants, and a flying bird next to cherry blossom branches. At the base a closed drilled hole, the signature in an iron-red square rubbed.
