A very large embroidered wall hanging. Meiji period, late 19th century

Displaying two kirin and a large phoenix in a landscape with cloud bands and a large tree, embroidered in beige, gray and brown colours with a few couched threads, the ground fabric completely covered with couched gold-wrapped paper threads in regular horizontal layers, a few threads loose. Several areas with cotton wadding and paper padding beneath stitches. Blue brocade border, a bit shabby along the edges, lined with green cotton and metal rings for hanging.
