An ivory manju netsuke of a dragon amidst waves by Hironobu. Second half 19th century

The coiled dragon of gilded and silvered metal set into a bowl carved with foaming waves. Signed Hironobu in seal characters. The tama, probably of coral, now missing.
Height 2.8 cm; diameter 4.6 cm

Cf. a similar netsuke in the Baur Collection (C 272), signed Katsushika ju Kakuyusai Hironobu. Hironobu embellished his works with mother-of-pearl and coral, or, as here, with metal.
