Cornelis Springer

View of Lübeck Market
1870

Oil on canvas. 102 x 142 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: C Springer 1870..

Springer was commissioned by the Bremen merchant von J.D. Dreyer to paint the ‘View of the Lübeck Market’ at the height of his artistic career. The artist's sales records show that Dreyer purchased the Lübeck city view for 1,400 guilders on 24 February 1870. Considering that the average annual income at the time was around 85 guilders, this purchase price was an extraordinarily high sum.

The large-format view of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck, founded in the 12th century, with the important St Mary's Church and imposing town hall, adorned the Viennese palace of the Jewish banker and art collector Victor Ephrussi until 1938. A historical photograph from 1905 shows his wife Baroness Emilie Henrietta Schey von Koromla (1879-1938) posing in front of the painting. The Hanseatic City of Lübeck restituted the painting to the heirs of Ignaz Ephrussi in 2004.
