Cornelis Springer

Market Square by St. Martin's Church in Braunschweig
1874

Oil on panel. 80 x 65 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: Cornelis Springer 1874.

The parish church of St Martin and the Gothic town hall, painted here by Cornelis Springer, was a unique architectural ensemble of the Middle Ages in Brunswick, which was depicted throughout the 19th century not only in paintings and watercolours, but also in porcelain and photographs. Springer contrasts the open tracery arbour of the town hall on the right with the reddish brick of the main choir of the parish church. In doing so, he brings the two buildings closer together, creating an enclosed stage for the lively events on the market square.
